Vermejo Park Ranch
He sensed that something was out there but he could not see or smell us. Yet. We slipped in walking maybe half a mile over a tree and rock strewn ridge to a grassy plain with a pine tree ridge line. The show started at around 5pm. Altitude 7,000 feet with a temperature of 65ish. Just enough altitude to get you winded with camera and tripod plus going uphill most of the way with a jack rabbit of a guide. James our guide gave us our positions. We readied our equipment in anticipation of the unknown. We could hear the rustle and bugling but could not see. Then the battles began and running of the males in frantic attempts to keep the females in the harem. Young bulls would test the old bulls. There were the antler battles and they sounded mighty. It was better than fireworks in my opinion.
